Travelling to the Mediterranean in the Off Season

The Mediterranean is one of the most popular places in the world for holiday makers. Indeed, millions of people from colder climes travel there every year to relax and sun themselves on the beach. These places are most popular between Easter and the end of the summer, while they are largely empty in the winter. This shouldn’t dissuade you from visiting in the colder months as the area still has a lot to offer.

The Mediterranean is one of the most interesting cultural areas in the world – Spain, Greece and Italy all have vibrant traditions and celebrations as well as gorgeous food. These great attractions can be found on the mainland and on the islands and beach resorts, yet when the swarms of tourists arrive this side of the area can be hard to see. By coming here in the off-season you will be able to get acquainted with the Mediterranean as it was before the advent of global tourism and will thus get the chance to see so much of the wonderful local culture.

This part of the world also has a lot to offer history buffs. If you travel to Spain you can visit romantic medieval castles, while in the Greek Islands you can witness more recent historic events such as the ravages Kefalonia experienced during World War Two. Or you can travel to Turkey where some of the greatest empires held dominion for centuries at a time. Indeed, this is a truly interesting part of the world and there is so much to see in every single country.

Of course, if you come here during the off season you may not get to experience a great deal of seaside sunbathing. That said, the area is still quite warm and temperatures will feel balmy for people coming from snow-ridden climes. You will get the chance to warm yourself up, though a sun-tan may elude you.

For tourists who are interested in culture, history or avoiding the crowds it might be best to visit the Mediterranean between September and February. You will have a great time, even if the weather isn’t perfect. Most importantly, you will get a truer picture of this part of the world, free from the ravages of swarming tourists.
